Job Overview

Our client, a Kenyan software development company developing and managing digital products across different markets, is seeking an experienced, versatile, and solutions-oriented Software Developer & Support Engineer to join its technology team.

The company develops subscription-based software solutions, including a career assessment and guidance platform, alongside other products in development within the HR, school management, school transport tracking, and talent assessment sectors.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing new software features and products while maintaining, supporting, and improving existing applications. The role will involve full-stack development, mobile application development, system maintenance, troubleshooting, deployment, and providing technical support to internal teams and customers.

The ideal candidate should have strong software development and debugging skills, experience supporting live production systems, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment. They should be comfortable balancing new product development with ongoing system maintenance and technical support.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and deploy new features across web applications, mobile applications, and backend systems.
• Contribute to the development and improvement of the company's software products, including HR systems, school management solutions, school bus tracking, and talent assessment platforms.
• Maintain and improve existing applications to ensure reliability, performance, and scalability.
• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve software defects, system errors, and technical issues affecting users.
• Provide technical support and resolve escalated issues raised by customers, schools, parents, learners, and internal teams.
• Monitor system performance, application uptime, and infrastructure to identify and address potential technical problems.
• Manage software releases, deployments, backups, and development environments to ensure safe and reliable updates.
• Integrate third-party services, including payment gateways, messaging platforms, and analytics tools.
• Maintain clean, secure, well-structured, and properly documented code.
• Implement appropriate data security measures, including access controls, encryption, and audit logging.
• Ensure applications comply with relevant data protection requirements, particularly when handling children's and employees' personal information.
• Support the technical onboarding of institutional customers, including account setup, data imports, and system configuration.
• Work with the sales team during product demonstrations, technical presentations, and customer engagements.
• Develop and maintain system dashboards, reports, and administrative features based on user and business requirements.
• Work closely with management and other internal teams to identify technical challenges and recommend appropriate solutions.
• Provide realistic development timelines, communicate project progress, and escalate potential delivery delays.
• Maintain technical documentation covering applications, systems, deployment procedures, and support processes.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
• At least 4 years of proven experience in software development, preferably involving the development and support of live production applications.
• Strong full-stack development skills, including experience with backend technologies, frontend frameworks, and relational databases.
• Experience developing and maintaining web applications and mobile applications.
• Good understanding of software architecture, database design, API development, and third-party integrations.
• Experience with software deployment, version control, CI/CD processes, and production environment management.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot software issues, resolve production incidents, and provide technical support.
• Good understanding of application security, data protection, and secure software development practices.
• Strong problem-solving, debugging, and analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and deliver projects with minimal supervision.
• Good technical documentation and communication skills.

Added Advantage

• Experience developing multi-tenant SaaS platforms, subscription-based software, or cloud-based applications.
• Experience working on education technology, assessment platforms, HR systems, or school management solutions.
• Familiarity with M-Pesa integrations, Paybill, and other Kenyan payment systems.
• Experience developing administrative dashboards, reporting systems, and institutional management tools.
• Experience working with shared software infrastructure across multiple products.
• Experience working in a small technology team or as an early technical hire in a growing company.
• Familiarity with Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019, particularly requirements relating to children's and employees' personal data.
• Familiarity with the Kenyan education system, including CBE, KJSEA, KCSE, and KUCCPS.
